XIX SIMPÓSIO INTERNACIONAL DE HISTÓRIA MARÍTIMA
O Mar como espaço de encontros: Velhos e Novos Mundos
Continuando o ciclo iniciado em 2025 em que se problematizou o modo como mar foi e é um meio propiciador e instrumental para o encontro de povos, troca de conhecimentos e intercâmbios culturais, neste ano de 2026 continuaremos esta nossa reflexão. Fá-lo-emos, tendo em atenção de como, ao longo dos séculos, se estabeleceram os contactos, encontros, desencontros entre os espaços europeu, africano, americano e asiático. Os mares permitiram desde os tempos mais remotos o estabelecimento e consolidação de múltiplas redes e comunidades tecnológicas, económicas, sociais, políticas culturais …
Partindo e ampliando a metáfora vespuciana de Mundus Novus o XIX Simpósio Internacional de História Marítima, organizado pela Academia de Marinha, através da sua Classe de História Marítima, é subordinado ao tema O Mar como espaço de encontros: Velhos e Novos Mundos. Este decorrerá em Lisboa, no Auditório “Almirante Rogério de Oliveira" no próximo mês de novembro, nos dias 24 a 26 em que se pretende debater os seguintes tópicos:
- Do conceito de oceano e a arte de navegar;
- Viagens na e da Europa para os continentes africano, americano e asiático;
- Interações culturais e tecnológicas;
- Impactos económicos, sociais e político-militares.
A inscrição para apresentação de comunicações com o título e o resumo respetivo (até 1700 caracteres sem espaços), bem como um CV resumido (15 linhas), deverá ser efetuada até 6 de julho de 2026.
A informação da Comissão Científica sobre a aceitação das comunicações propostas ocorrerá até 31 de julho de 2026.

XIX INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON MARITIME HISTORY
The Sea as a space of encounters: Old and NewWorlds
Building on the cycle initiated in 2025, devoted to understanding how the sea has been and remains a key factor in fostering encounters among peoples, the exchange of knowledge and cultural interaction, we will carry this reflection further in 2026. In this year’s edition, we will consider how, over the centuries, contacts, encounters, and moments of tension and rupture have taken shape between European, African, American, and Asian spaces. From the earliest
times, the seas enabled the formation and consolidation of multiple technological, economic, social, political, and cultural networks and communities.
Taking Vespucci’s metaphor of Mundus Novus as its point of departure, while also expanding upon it, the XIX International Symposium on Maritime History, organised by the Portuguese Maritime Society through its Maritime History Class, will be devoted to the theme The Sea as a Space of Encounters: Old and New Worlds. The symposium will take place in Lisbon, at the “Almirante Rogério de Oliveira” Auditorium, from 24 to 26 November 2026, and will invite discussion on the following topics:
- The concept of the ocean and the art of navigation/sailing;
- Voyages within Europe and from Europe to the African, American, and Asian continents;
- Cultural and technological interactions;
- Economic, social, and politico-military impacts.
Paper proposals should include a title, an abstract of up to 250 words, keywords, and a short biographical note of up to 100 words and should be submittedby 6 July 2026.
The Scientific Committee will notify applicants of its decision by 31 July 2026.
